Class of 1965
Army, 3 Years

Enlisted the same day my draft papers arrived. Missed chopped pilot school by one point (so they told me). Assigned (after boot camp in S. Carolina) Ft Monmouth for cryptography school. Required 2 weeks of basic eloctronics which bored me to sleep. Washed out. Assigned to photography school. 2 classmates went to hawaii. All the rest of us assigned to 221st Signal Co. at Ft Monmouth, hidden way in the back who were going to Viet Nam. Served one year in Viet Nam as combat photographer with elevated duties when assigned to SEAPC. Worked as quaility control, had a Major I looked out for, access to a jeep, lab work, and photog. work. Greatest comraderie of my life post high school. Stand out moments..1. Telling a captain he couldn't have copies of a slide he gave me. It was of him and 2 mates with their feet on a pile of dead vietnamese like they were a deer prize. Asked to speak to my commander (The Major) He stood by me. 2. Being lifted into the air when our ammo dump was hit and 3. My last day there, the day I was to leave the 2nd TET offensive began. I kept telling my buds "I knew I wasn't getting out of here I Knew it"!! LMAO...Well?....I got out.

Class of 1963
Air Force, 4 Years

Served in the Air Force from May 1966 to February 1970. Did my basic training at Amarillo TX then was assigned to the 3700 Food Service Staff Office at Lackland AFB in San Antonio TX as an Administration Specialist. Spent 2 year there until I was transferred to the 821st Combat Security Policy Squadron. Trained with them May 1968-June 1968 at Schofield Barracks Hawaii. After the training we went to Vietnam and our base camp was Phan Rang. I was sent to Tan Son Nhut AB in Saigon to help set up our Intel Section. Return to the States in Dec 1968 and was permanently assigned to the 821st and was transferred to our home base at Forbes AFB Topeka Kansas. Trained again at Fort Campbell KY until we left for Vietnam again. I was NCOIC of our squadrons Intel section during the time at Tan Son Nhut AB in Saigon, attached to the 7th Air Force. BTW the 821st CSPS primary duty was security for the perimeter of the Air Force bases in Vietnam. My primary duty was gathering the info from our intel people, formulation the classified reports every week to be sent back to the States to various intel offices. Remained in Vietnam until February 1970 when we returned to the states and I was given and "early out" because my enlistment was almost over.
After returning to Delaware I joined the family insurance agency (Bird, Ford & Co., Inc.). I bought the agency outright in 1990 and then sold the agency December 2005 and retired. May 2006 I moved to San Diego CA and lived there until May 2014 then moved to Phoenix AZ where I now live.
