While many of my classmates and friends had major challenges in their military career, mine was rather different.
Out of basic I passed on the offer for OCS, and received a posting to Ft. Belvior, Va. Great duty right outside Washington DC. However Vietnam beckoned. I eventually moved up the beltway to Ft. Meade assigned to the 17th Public Information Detachment attached to the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, a unit being assembled for deployment to RVN. I was to be a combat photographer. We moved late summer but I was advance party so I flew over while many of my "band of brothers" threw up all the way over on the troop ships. While waiting for them I spent my days in Saigon getting familiar with MACV and USARV an Tan Son Nuit airbase where I would have my film developed. As a new unit in country we spent most of my year there (mid1965-1966) clearing the jungle and creating the base camp at Xuan Loc. I spent my last year back at Ft. Belvior monitoring the peace marches on full alert. The reason I was a combat photographer? In my record was a note describing my Breezes experience at Tonka.

USS Blueridge LCC 19 Communications Command Ship. 1975 I was in Viet Nam and Cambodia then to Saigon for the evacuation... What a waste of lives and a disgracefully executed withdrawal. I protested the war from Jr. High until today. But I joined and thinking the war was over and would not end up there. OOP's
Not the evacuation. Oh well, I came out of it AOK>

In charge of the evacuation of Saigon in 1975. Traveled from Cambodia to south and north Viet Nam. After 1.5 yrs.... in navy and 6 mos in Nam, They found out most of my stomach was removed in High School due to a car accident on roller coaster hills. Tried to kick me out for fraudulent enlistment! Did my job in Nam and did not balk at special missions with my secret security clearance. Hubert Humphrey was a friend of my moms. He heard about this from my mom and commander and I ended up with an Honorable Discharge due to missions I participated in. Did my duty...

I enlisted November 1973. Spent 9 months in Monterey, CA, at the Defense Language Institute, fully immersed in Russian. I spent 3 years in Germany on the then East Germany border, listening to Russian military communications. I was then transferred to Ft. Hood TX, where I worked with other linguists, providing training to keep their language skills up. I got out of the army in 1980, and went to college at Kansas State University, with a Russian major, and Pre Veterinarian minor. While in college, I joined the Kansas Air National Guard 190th Aerial Refueling Group in Topeka, Kansas, in 1983. I was trained as a Veterinarian Food Inspector/Environmental Health Technician. In 1986 I reenlisted in the Army, and was trained as a Laboratory Technician. In 1987 I arrived at Camp Zama, 3 weeks
before Emperor Hirahito passed away. During my 3-year tour I worked with a Physician Assistant and a Nurse Practioner; along with the doctors, and nurses; which sparked my desire to become a Physician Assistant. In 1990, I was transferred to Presidio of San Francisco, where I worked in research, with Lazer Eye Injuries. I completed the college course requirements for the Army Physician Assistant Course, and submitted my packet for the selection board. In 1991 I was sent to the Advanced Laboratory Technician course at Ft Sam Houston. In September 1991 the board selected me as one of 60 out of 400 + applicants for PA school. In 1993, I was commissioned upon graduation and sent to Ft Hood,Texas, during which time I deployed to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for 6 months, with a Patriot Missle Battalion, after Desert Storm. My last duty station was 18 month in Camp Humphreys, South Korea as a Flifgt Surgeon PA. I retired from the Army Nov 1999 as a Captain. I continued my service to the Military as a PA at the VA Hospital Urgent Care in Chillicothe, until Sep 2019 when I fully retired.
