I attended the University of Mississippi on a 3-year ROTC scholarship and entered the Regular Army as an Armor Lieutenant in 1975.
I was assigned to C Troop, 2/1 Cavalry Troop, in the 2nd Armored Division for Fort Hood, TX. My first troop commander was Captain Hugh L. Mills. Hugh is one of the most decorated aviators of the Vietnam War...AND his grandmother was Ms. Opal (?) Smith, who taught us Chemistry at Central High School.
I went on to command E Troop, 2nd Squadron, 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment in Germany and then became the Plans Officer for the Regiment. After my return from Germany I entered the Army Research and Development Community and spent the rest of my uniformed career working with teams developing some of the weapons being used by today's army.
I retired from active duty as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1995, but I returned as an Army Civilian employee in 2009. I served 9 and 1/2 years. I served at Fort Bliss, TX, and I retired a second time in 2018 as a GS-15.
