Class of 1967
Navy, 4 Years

I joined the Navy in August of 1968 . I took my pre-physical and completed hours of written tests expecting to ship out after my physical on August 22nd 1968. I had gotten rid of clothing and other things I didn't think I would need. I gave notice at Brighams that I was leaving for boot camp. On August 22nd 1968 a few of My friends Arrived at my house at 6AM and drove me to the Boston Army base. To my surprise after the entry physical they gave me my orders and sent me home. My entry was delayed until the day after Christmas! I got my job back and worked until it was time to go again. When xmas came I didn't get ary presents because I couldn't take anything with me! My friends again took me to the Boston army base for another physical and off I went to Great Lakes training center for 2 and a half months of boot camp. This time I missed being home for my March birthday and like christmas, no Birthday presents! Two weeks later I began 8 months of electronics training at Naval Air Station Memphis Tennessee. After graduation I was sent to N.A.S. North Island California for almost another year of specialized aviation electronics training. When my Squadron VAW-111 returned from Vietnam I joined them and received even more training. I attended Deep water survival training, Beach Survival training followed by SERE School which was survival, evasion, resistance and escape training. I then left for My first tour in Vietnam. My job was troubleshooting Airborne Early Warning Aircraft Radar and electronic systems. We worked 12 hours on and 12 hours off while our Aircraft provided air traffic control to our air wings combat aircraft over the active combat area's. Additionally we ran intercepts on Russian and Chinese Migs. and combat ships. I was trained by our flight crews during combat support missions . The enlisted Flight Techs and the Radar Intercept Officer's took me under their wing so to speak in the aircraft and in the Ready room after my flight deck shift was over as well. Soon the training paid off. Dan , a second class in flight tech broke his arm and was grounded , then another flight tech was discharged and there were no replacements. I was able to fill in for the remainder of the deployment . After returning to San Diego I was able to receive my training by our Flight Officers in trainers on the ground and on training flights. After about nine months in the states we returned to South East Asia. This time I was assigned to the flight deck as a trouble shooter and I was on the flight Schedule. I got to attend Jungle Surville School taught with the Filipino Negritos Pygmies. During this deployment We saw action supporting the troops in the mekong delta and along the Ho Chi men trail between Laos and Cambodia and Vietnam. Latter we moved up to the DMZ and operated near DaNang where we refueled our aircraft and Hanoi up as far as the Coast of China. We coordinated the mining of Haiphong harbor and ran intercepts on Russian and chinese flown Migs. We provided target location and vectors to our attack aircraft and we coordinated the strikes against surface to air missile sights around Hanoi. We were aware of P.O.W.'s and we were on the lookout for American P.O.W.s that may have been escaping captivity from the Viet Cong. Every time we picked up small boats or rafts on our Radar near the DMZ we would drop down and fly low over the small rafts and boats looking for escaped American P.O.W's. Many time we came under fire and we called in our fighters sand bombers to knock them out. On one occasion we saw a small boat waving an American flag. When we dropped down to investigate, the boat opened up on us and we called in an A-7 Corsair to knock it out. It was carrying a 2000 lb. bunker buster bomb. It hit the boat and exploded seconds after the bomb had destroyed the boat. On another occasion we spotted a raft in the water just south of Hanoi when we got down low and close a group of Russian tanks came out of the jungle and opened up on our aircraft. We were working with a squadron of A-7 corsairs we gave them a vector and they were able to damage or destroy all of the tanks. We were the last American aircraft in sky the night the Vietnam war ended . We carried a practice smoke bomb that we threw out our over head hatch one minute after midnight the night the war ended. When we returned to NAS North Island I was awarded six air medals and a South Vietnamese air Gallantry Cross for flying over two hundred combat missions. I had also been extended 6 months past my discharge date. It was voluntary. My Skipper asked me and five other Petty Officers to extend for the duration and we all agreed. As a result he sent us to Taipei Taiwan on R and R. as well as to Hong Kong and also to Baguio in the Philippines. My time in the Navy provided me with the electronics training that qualified me for many of the jobs that I received after College including Solid State Technology, Terradyne, Lockheed California Company McDonnell Douglas and Boeing. It all worked out well for me.
