Army, 22 Years

I served in the U.S. Army for 22 years retiring in 2004. My first duty station was with the 2nd Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment at Ft. Lewis, Washington. After attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant, I attended the Army's "Green to Gold" program, and after completion, was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. Following my commission, I briefly served as a Platoon Leader in the 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. While at Ft. Bragg I attended SFAS and, after selection attended the Q Course. After graduation from the Q Course, I was assigned to the 10th SFG in Bad Tölz, Germany. In the ensuing years I was assigned to SOCOM at MacDill AFB in Tampa, was a Staff Officer at the Pentagon, and many other assignments. My final duty assignment was as the Deputy Commander for Planning and Operations at JSOC back again at Fort Bragg. My combat deployments included: Operation Just Cause Panama, Desert Shield/Storm Kuwait/Iraq; Operation Joint Endeavor Bosnia/Croatia; and Operation Enduring Freedom Afghanistan. While on a mission in OEF, I suffered a blast injury that left me 100% service-connected disabled. Following that injury and medical treatment, I retired as a Lieutenant Colonel, much earlier than I had anticipated. Looking back, the only thing I would change is that one millisecond where I was injured. I was lucky enough to have set foot on every continent in the world, with the exception of Antarctica. What was intended to be a 3-year enlistment in order for me to figure out what I wanted to do turned into a 22-year career that I greatly enjoyed.
