Navy Reserves, 6 Years

Two years active duty aboard the USS Sumner County (LST 1148). Reported aboard in November 1965 in Danang, Vietnam where I was assigned to Deck Force taking care of the ships rust problem. I chipped paint, painted, swabbed decks, and cleaned our living quarters. After six months, I asked to be transferred to Supply. This included more rust removal. After six months, I passed the Petty Officer 3rd Class exam for Storekeeper and was asked to run the ship's store and work in the supply office. In 1967 I passed the Petty Officer 2nd Class exam for Storekeeper.
I did two tours to Vietnam aboard the Sumner County. We provided combat support to small Coast Guard river boat units operating in the rivers around Danang. We also provded logistical support to the Army's 100 and First and the Marines by transporting them, their equipment and supplies. We spent several months in Danang and made several trips to beaches up and down the coast of Vietnam. We even made one trip up the Mekong Delta to Saigon.

Four years US Navy Reserves - San Diego, CA.
