Class of 1965
Air Force, 20+ Years

After majoring in Hearts and the beach at Edison from 1965 to 1966 but not too many classes, my academic career was put on hold and I enlisted in the Air Force. I spent 1967 to 1970 as an Electronic Warfare Equipment Repair Technician. I was stationed at Keesler AFB Mississippi, Westover AFB Massachusetts, Andersen AFB Guam, and Tan Son Nhut AB Republic of Vietnam. I separated from the Air Force upon return from Viet Nam and attended the University of South Florida in Tampa from 1970 to 1973.

Upon graduation with a BA in Marketing in 1973, I attended Air Force Officer Training School and was commissioned a second lieutenant. For the next two years, I attended Navigator School and Electronic Warfare Officer (EWO) training at Mather AFB California, then B-52 Combat Crew Training School at Castle AFB California. Finally, I received my first operational assignment as a B-52 EWO at Griffiss AFB, NY in 1975. Two years later, I was reassigned to Andersen AFB Guam as a B-52 Instructor/Flight Examiner, then two years later I was a Captain and received an assignment as an Instructor at the B-52 Combat Crew Training School back at Castle AFB California. Three yeas later, I was selected to be an Aircraft Test Director at Strategic Air Command (SAC) Headquarters at Offutt AFB in Omaha, Nebraska. While there, I directed operational testing of B-52 Electronic Warfare equipment and directed B-52 and FB-111 flight-testing at a classified test range in Nevada. During the previous 5 years, I had attended graduate school part-time and earned my MBA in Management from Golden Gate University in 1985.

In 1985, I was promoted to a Major and selected to go to the Pentagon as a staff officer for the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition and Procurement. While there, I was responsible Air Force oversight of a $4 billion procurement program for both Air Force and Navy front-line fighters. I traveled extensively in Europe and attended NATO headquarters 2 to 3 times each year as the Pentagon representative to a NATO Air Group. In 1989 I was promoted to Lt. Colonel but I had other plans, turned down the promotion and retired in December 1989.

I returned to Fort Myers in 1993 and now have a gorgeous Canadian wife, a beautiful home and a great job.

Class of 1968
Army, 1 Years

Jimmy Luckey left Fort Myers in July of 1968 to join the United States Army. He began his tour in Vietnam on September 2, 1968. He was a corpsman E4 in 5TH Batallion, 60TH INFANTRY, 9TH INFANTRY DIVISION, USARV when his unit encountered hostile enemy fire at Kien Tuong Province, South Vietnam. Jimmy lost his life while defending our freedom. According to his citation for the Silver Star "Specialist 4 Luckey had thrown himself between the body of his unit commander and enemy gunfire while serving in Vietnam and had died instantly. His courageous action reflected the highest credit upon himself, the Ninth Infantry Division to which he was attached as a corpsman, and the United States Army." He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action, the Bronze Star for valor, the Order of the Purple Heart with one oak leaf cluster, the Combat Medical Badge and other medals. The medals were presented to his parents, Mr. And Mrs. Owen Luckey, Sr. by Lt. Col. Walter Tucker, representing the secretary of the army. His name can be found on the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial Wall at Panel W4 Line 77. Jimmy was a very special person. It was my honor and privilege to have attended our Senior Prom with him. I will always remember his warm smile and his kind nature. I look forward to seeing him again in Heaven. Submitted by Kathy Long (Barnes)

I attended Edgewood Elementary and Ft. Myers High for 12 years. I entered the Army in 1959, with training in Engineer Equipment Mechanic School, Communications Center Specialist School, and the Non-Commissioned Officers Academy for the “Leadership Advanced Course”, receiving completion certificates for all three. Alumni letter
During the Military, I received the “Vietnam Campaign Service” medal, serving with the 1st Cavalry Division, from 1965 thru 1966, at the request of President Johnson and the People of Vietnam. After serving the year of a Political and Financial backed War, I decided to hang it up, besides, they were still using real bullets over there. I was discharged in 1968 with an Honorable Discharge and a 10% disability rating. I would have loved to serve my country for 20 years, but needed to move on.
My first civilian job was with the Virginia Dept. of Highways as a Cartographic Draftsman Aide, and was selected to assist the Procurement Officer for the Interstate 95 project.
Furthering my education, I attended the Art Institute of Miami for 2 years in Commercial Art and Photography. No diplomas or certificates given.
I began my 45 year Sign Trade profession, beginning with the lettering of billboards, then designing, manufacturing, service, and installation of electric signs, then the foreman for the above previous departments, some customer contact involving sales, and finally, establishing the Survey, Permit Research, and Procurement Department for a large custom sign manufacturer with National accounts.
I am married to my wife of 39 years, living in the same home for 35 years, having one daughter who graduated from FSU and living in Manhattan, enjoy the mountains for vacations, am an amateur photographer, and enjoy people and genealogy.
