James (Jim) Petersen
Class of 1966
Marine Corps, 25 Years
Sworn into United States Marine Corps in 1968. Commissioned 2nd Lt. in 1971. Served in Japan, Vietnam and Cambodia, as well as a year “haze gray and underway” aboard 7th Fleet ships. Piloted the last military aircraft to leave Vietnamese airspace on the morning of April 30th, 1975. After almost eight years with the Marines I “retired”, mostly to teach sailing and race sailboats on the Gulf Coast, while trying to get into medical school. After three years I joined the United States Coast Guard where I spent nearly ten more years, mostly in Miami, doing intense Search and Rescue operations, drug interdiction, and participating in the invasion of Grenada. Left the USCG to fly for Northwest Airlines, and served almost seven more years in the National Guard, to finish up my required retirement obligation. There I deployed for operations in Panama, and fought forest fires in the Black Hills. I was a test pilot at several points in my military career and served in that capacity at the NASA Ames-Dryden Integrated Test Facility at Edwards AFB. All in all, through combat, aircraft crashes, shoot outs with drug smugglers, and aircraft mechanical failures of every description, I a happy to say I have come away from my military experience relatively unscathed, and with a lifetime of memories and friends. I have become a bit of an anti-war advocate these past twenty plus years as I have lived and worked in many countries around the globe as an environmental consultant, mostly concerning portable water issues. I have returned to Vietnam several times, sometimes for months, on these projects.
