UPDATE: T-BIRDS Will Rally and Rule!!!

Representatives from KKTV Channel 11, KRDO Channel 13, and KOAA Channel 5 were present as were two reporters from the Gazette. Members of the Wasson student body, parents, teachers, staff, former teachers (including Coach Tom Falgien), Wasson alumni, and of course the impassioned Goose Gossage, were present and provided further insight and support as voices for the many who were unable to attend. This consummate cheerleader came equipped with a line-up of megaphones (from 2 years at Horace Mann and 3 at Wasson), wearing Wasson buttons potentially dating back to my sister and brothers’ eras (’61 and ’65), and Gossages’ Wasson baseball warm up jacket (which he autographed for me after his induction into the Hall of Fame in 2008).
Gossage was introduced by the current president of the Wasson PTA, Fred (?), and he presented his viewpoints, asked why the questions submitted in December by Fred to the District 11 School Board still haven’t been addressed, and challenged them to validate the information they used to determine whether or not Wasson should be closed.
He also asked why the agreement reached three years ago, to keep Wasson open for the next five years, was being abandoned in favor of closing it at the end of this school year. Gossage also called for an investigation regarding the validity of the budget numbers and what sources the board utilized to reach their conclusions and the potential closure.
I cannot tell you how impactful it was to witness the passion, commitment and dedication of those in attendance; but the crux of the event (for me) was having students thank us, approach me and ask if they could give me a hug! Guess I’ll always be a cheerleader for Wasson...whether we’re winning or the under-dogs!!
Plans are being made for a march from Wasson to the District 11 administrative building next Wednesday and the organizers hope to include the Wasson band, athletes, teachers, staff, parents, grandparents, alumni and all interested parties to join them. I will post this information as I receive it and hope that more of our T-BIRD family may participate!

T-BIRDS Will Rally and Rule!!!

Rick “Goose” Gossage asked that I spread the word to all former T-BIRDS that he is organizing a press conference in support of our current (and future) T-BIRDS in their quest to keep Roy J. Wasson High School open, and to promote its future growth and success!
When: Tuesday, January 29, 2013
Time: 10:00 a.m.
Where: Roy J. Wasson High School
In traditional “Gossage style” Rick speaks from his heart and own personal experiences in an article written by David Ramsey and published in the Gazette on Saturday:
RAMSEY: Goose Gossage battles to save Wasson
Goose Gossage is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, class of 2008, but he’s just as proud...
“But, really, it’s not about my nostalgia,” Goose said. “It’s about the feeling at that school. They’ve really made great strides in pushing ownership of that school to the kids. And those kids are so important.”
Goose earned his plaque at the Hall of Fame with his overpowering fastball. After departing Wasson, he became a pioneer of modern relief pitching, grew a fearsome mustache, won a World Series title and terrified batters for 22 seasons.
He knows all about strikeouts.
“Closing Wasson will be the third strike for those kids,” he said. “It will be their third strike. Those kids have two strikes against them. It’s shocking to me they’re making plans to close the school. It’s absurd.”
