About Me | As with most of our classmates, I went off to colllege about the time hurricane Carla was hitting our city. While I loved being in San Marcos, I really wasn't too serious about studying like I needed to. I left school at the end of the first semester and went to work in Galveston at American National. - Yea for that great training center, as it was then thought of. By mid-March of '62 I married my childhood sweetheart, Billy Gilbert. We were married until his death on January 26, 2008 - almost 46 years. As with most marriages, we had our good times and bad, but if I had it to do all over again, I would make the same choice. In '64 I went to work for Pan American Gas Company in TC. It was a great job - got to work a chromatograph - testing the composition of the gas that our company was buying and selling. I also ran an integrator which measured how much gas was either bought or sold and calculated the cost there for. Comuters perform these tasks now, of course. After being married almost 7 yrs our son was born and 8 years after that we were blessed with a daughter. Trae is a psychologist in Austin, working on his PhD, and Tara lives in Seabrook and is a therapy manager in a Re-hab facility. Billy and I were 61 when Tara bless us with our only grandchild. I went back to work when Tara was three and spent 20 years in aerospace. I managed NASA's shuttle drawing library for a period of time. Billy and I took early retirement in 1999 but that was short lived. After a few months we did some part time work and thereafter we both found ourselves with full time jobs once more. I spent 8 years working for UTMB HealthCare Systems, a subsidiary of UTMB, whereby I contracted with staffing agencies for bringing in supplemental nurses when UTMB had a shortage. I left this position with the intent of caring for Billy who had suddendly become very ill. Billy and I bought a home in Schulenburg to retire to. The house is an old colonial, built in 1890, that has been restored. We sold our home of 30 years in Dickinson in June '07. Thereafter we lived in Baytown with his sister during the week and continued to work our secular jobs. We did this because Billy's medical insurance stipulated he remain in the Houston-Galveston area to be effective. We only got to go home on weekends. Billy loved this house with it's oak trees but he never got to "live" here. That breaks my heart. I have some cousins in this community, which I am not real close to, but I am going to try to make this my home. My mother and dad were originally from here, so I know the area and I l...(read more) |
