Respected Latin Teacher, Dr. Charles Lindsay Gilliam, passed away.

NEWPORT NEWS - Dr. Charles Lindsay Gilliam went home to be with the Lord on July 19, 2013. He was 82. A native of Hampton, Virginia, he grew up on Locust Avenue in Wythe. He is survived by his wife, Sally Ames Gilliam, his children, Daniel Charles Gilliam of OH, John and Dinah Gilliam Nuelle of IL, Christopher and Mary Gilliam Morgan of GA, Mickey and Liza Gilliam Edwards of GA, John and Amy Copeland Campbell of NN, and Stephen and Christy Copeland of NN. He dearly loved them all, especially his 17 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his niece and nephews, Lindsay Jones Gallagher, W. Christian Jones, and Robert R. Cowling. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Annie Charles Gilliam, and his brothers and sisters, Hugh Gilliam, Eddie and Louise Gilliam Adams, Charles and Dorkas Gilliam Sykes, and Willie and Faye Gilliam Jones. Charlie graduated from Hampton High School in 1948. He was also a graduate of Cincinnati Christian University, University of Cincinnati, Harding Graduate School, Kansas State University Graduate School, and St. Mark's Major Seminary. He taught both Latin and Greek at Manhattan Christian College, where he also served as Dean of Students. As an ordained minister of the Christian Church, he served in churches in Ohio, Kentucky, Missouri, Kansas, and Virginia. He was the founding minister of the Williamsburg Christian Church. In the 1990's he returned to the York County School Division, where he had begun in 1960, and retired from Tabb High School, while teaching Latin, in 2003. Charlie was an extremely talented artist who created many beautiful paintings which will be greatly treasured. Charlie was proudest of all for being a United States Marine. He served during the time of the Korean War. Charlie was a former member and Timothy of the 24th Street Church of Christ, former President of the Thomas Nelson Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, former President of the York County Teacher's Association, member of the Hugenot Society and Grace Episcopal Church in Yorktown. He loved gardening, traveling, and spending time at the beach. He enjoyed attending concerts and was a faithful supporter of the Peninsula Concert Band and the James River Pops. He was faithful to his church and was happy to serve in any capacity. Whether reading, teaching, or serving, he felt it was never enough. He was truly a good Christian man. He will be missed forever by his family, who loved him so much. He will also be missed by his constant companion and friend, Daisy, his dog. Charlie will be in our hearts forever. There will be a visitation for friends and family at St. Stephen's Episcoal Church on Hiden Blvd. in Newport News from 6-7:00 p.m., Monday, July 22, 2013, followed by a funeral service at 7:00 p.m. conducted by the Rev. Scott Baker. A reception will immediately follow in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the . Arrangements are by Weymouth Funeral Home.

'91 graduate passed away

Hi!...I just wanted to share with you all...that my brother Abraham K. Mahelona III ( a '91 graduate)....passed away on August 25, 2006.....He left behind two beautiful children.....He was trying to locate some of his friends...but had no luck...so if any of you know these people can you please pass this information on to them....Jason Roberts, Dave Smith, Kevin Snide, and some others that he played football with....Thank you!!....
