Remembering the 2000s
Wow, where did the decade go? No matter what year you graduated from high school, this last decade was a memorable one with milestones and events that we'll never forget. Looking back, there's several things that stand out and ensure that we'll remember the 2000s for years to come.
Do you remember 1990?
- The sports and boxing world is shocked when Buster Douglas knocked out the seemingly invincible Mike Tyson for the World Heavweight Boxing crown. Later in the year, Douglas looses his title to Evander Holyfield.
- The Hubble Space Telescope is launched to provide a better look into the stars.
- Iraq invades the oil rich country of Kuwait, which sparks the Gulf War involving the United States. The ground campaign, launched in 1991, lasted only 100 hours with a decisive victory for the US and its allies.
Do you remember 1980?
- In what is known as the Miracle on Ice, an out-matched team of college kids making up Team USA defeats the Soviet Union in the semifinals of the 1980 Winter Olympics. The Soviets were heavily favored, had defeated the US team earlier in the year and had also beaten an NHL All-Star Team. The US went on to win gold.
- Mt. St. Helens erupts in the state of Washington, spreading ash halfway across the United States and causing $3 billion dollars worth of damage.
- The Cable New Network is launched, ushering in an era of 24-hour news.
Do you remember 2000?
- Charles Schulz, the creator of the Peanuts comic strip with the lovable Charlie Brown, passes away.
- The 2000 Summer Olympics is held in Sydney, Australia.
- Astronauts move into the new International Space Station, a multi-country effort to further space exploration.
- George W. Bush defeats Vice President Al Gore in the 2000 presidential elections despite a large amount of controversy concerning voting results in Florida.
