Linda Self (Rodgers)

My curiosity about what happened to Cindy led me to reach out to a website about Alaska Maritime Deaths. Tonight I received an email from Captain Warren Cook. He has a website called alaskashipwreck.com and has written a book as well. This is his reply and attachment(s).

Cindy must have been quite a gal to get her own tug. Impressive by any standard. By the way, I graduated from Denton Senior High class of 1968 there in Texas. Ended up in Alaska in 1972 and stayed several decades. Am now retired in Florida and spend my time researching and passing on Alaska Shipwreck information. I will add Cynthia's name to the information in my books and website. All I had before you brought it to my attention was the name of the vessel lost. I will update my website at alaskashipwreck.com, my ALASKA SHIPWRECKS books and my web page at Alaska Fishermen RIP. Thank You for remembering; may she Rest in Peace ...Smooth Sailing.....Captain Warren Good

2 Bodies Recovered After
Boat Sinks in Kachemak Bay
SELDOVIA (AP) — A Seldovia
woman and an unidentified man were
killed when the woman’s boat went
down in Kachemak Bay, authorities
said Monday.
The Coast Guard pulled the bodies
from the bay Monday afternoon after
wreckage was spotted over about a
mile of water near Hesketh Island and
Barbara Point.
One of the bodies was identified as
that of Cynthia Jon Stults, 40, a
school cook and 10-year resident of
“ Apparently the boat broke up for
some reason and sank,” said Troopers
Cpl. Dan Weatherly, who was in Sel
dovia investigating the incident.
He said the weather Monday was
relatively calm, but there were reports
that overnight the wind had been
blowing hard and waves were crash
ing on the rocks.
Stults had bought the 38-foot,
wood-hulled harbor tug called the Pe
ter H. late this summer, Weatherly
said, and apparently was converting it
into a pleasure craft.
She and her companion apparently
were returning home to Seldovia from
Homer, leaving sometime between
8:30 p.m Sunday and 8 a.m. Monday,
when the Homer harbormaster report
ed the boat was gone, the Coast Guard
reported.
When Stults did not show up at
work Monday morning, a Coast
Guard helicopter from Kodiak began
searching for the vessel. The floating
debris first was spotted from a small
civilian plane.
“ There were pieces everywhere,”
said Coast Guard Petty Officer John
Germain in Juneau.
The helicopter and a Coast Guard
boat investigated the debris, finding
the woman’s body at about 1:30 p.m.
and the man’s some three hours later.
She was wearing a survival suit; he
was not, authorities said.
