Army, 2 Years

I was drafted into the Army in March of 1970. I got a student dsferment for 1 year then they didn't draft anyone from Davies county 1968 and i broke my left ankel twice the summer of 1969 and that kept me out for amother year. I went to Fort Loenardwood for basic, was sent to avation school at Fort Ruker Alabalma. Graduated from Helicopter school in August 1970, hime for 2 weeks then to DaNang Vietnam. Fort Ruker is in south Alabame, about 50 miles from Florida. One good thing about going from South Alabama to Vietnam, is there is no problem adjusting to the climat in Vietnam. I worked on Huey Hellicopters. I worked on everything on the hellicopter except eletrical, and seetmetal. Getting drafted and being sent to Avation school was not very commen, you had to score high mrchinical aptitude to have that happen. Guess all those year of Ag shop and me and Dad fixing our own machenery, cars, truck, and boat moters paid off. I was on a secure airfield and not getting shot at so I exetened my tour 33 days, that made me have less than 140 days left in the Army when I came back and they let me out, insted of stationing me somewhere in the states. Being drafted has it's disadvantigs, they can have you do any of the crapie details they dont wand any of the men that "enlisted" do. We were on a Marine airfield, we had about a fourth of it, and they pulled out about 5 monthe befor i came home, and the Army took over all the airfield. Each Unit had to send some men to help guard the place so beings I was drafted I one of them. So did guard duty for 5 months then came home. I was on active duty 19 monthes and 8 days. Came home went back driving a ready mix truck, Met my future wife, got to think about a family and wanted a better life for them than ready mix truck driver could provide so went to Eletrinics school on the GI bill, got maried, and bought a house and was able to fimance 100 percent on GI bill.

Marine Corps, 10 Years

Went to boot camp 5 days after graduation. I was stationed on the West Coast at MCAS Tustin, CA(which is one of the many closed bases now)after my initial schooling at Camp Pendleton. I made 3 deployments to Okinawa during my time in. I was a helicopter electrician working on Cobra's, Huey's, and the big Sea Stallions. I taught in a formal, indoor classroom numerous classes to new Marines for the type of Helicopter's they worked on and my last 2.5 years I was a fully qualified, all systems, Quality Assurance Rep...any repair that was made on the Aircraft that was a safety of flight issue I was responsible for inspecting to make certain that it was done correctly and entered into the Aircraft logbook. For up to 7 years I was responsible for that entry that all was correct as if it was not.......I could be charged and imprisoned for failure to do my job.

I also held a Top Secret clearance and was part of our crypto team for the squadron(secret codes and other boring things). I was Honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant(E-6) after a little more than 10 years active duty. As we all train in the military, regardless of rank, for a job(combat)we hope never comes we depend on those that do serve in that way as Freedom isn't free. I did not have the Honor to serve in that capacity but had I been called upon I was ready as some of my friends were and made the payment for all of us to be able to be here today doing whatever it is that we want to do. Rest easy America as there is a Marine awake tonight protecting you with everything he has so you can sleep at ease. Semper Fi my brothers and sisters!!!
