Playful, happy, and deeply loyal, David's regret was that he didn't finish high school; he thought it would be embarassing to go back, and be older than the other kids. That was so out of line with David's character, which was very brave, one who ventured out, defied convention. If he thought something was the right thing to do, good luck talking him out of it. In spite of his education, he was one who was wise beyond his 16 years. Yet he suffered from the berating and belittling often by someone he loved, and whose opinion he valued, by one who thought he would amount to nothing. One day, with the insistance of a couple of aquaintances, he stole his father's gun, and went on a joyride with them. In the interim, the decision was made to rob a small market. David handed the gun over to his accomplices, who went in, robbed the man, jumped back into the car and sped away, with David riding on the front passenger seat. As they sped off away from the City, headed toward Rolla, David began to panic; by then, they had returned the gun to him. Reality began to rush over him, and he, no doubt, felt like he had reached that point of no return. What would everybody think of him? Maybe he really is "worthless".....maybe there really is no way out. And with those thoughts swirling around in his mind, he took the gun out of his pocket, put the barrel to his temple, and pulled the trigger.
I knew him all my life. He was my first true love. He was my friend, my hero, always coming to my rescue, to my defense. That 16 year old girl loved him then, this 57 year old woman loves him still.
