And Gerald Kelly, who was from the same parish (Holy Child) as me and with whom I served mass as an altar boy. Both good guys whose lives ended much too soon. I joined the Army immediately after graduating from Daugherty and a little before Vietnam became the all consuming war of our generation. By the time I was honorably discharged as a buck sergeant in June of '66, 200,000+ troops were in Vietnam. Through pure luck and timing, I was not one of them. But I've always realized that I could just as easily have been like William Behan and Gerald Kelly, or any number of other young Cardinal Daugherty grads who ended up faithfully serving their country in that futile war of so many years ago. I salute all of them.
