About Me | I am currently an Artist. I paint on canvasses usually 36" by 48". My maiden name was La Brum. I graduated from Buena High School in Ventura in 1964. I have one Daughter and one Granddaughter. My Husband's Name is Bob and we have been togather since 1967. I was born in Oxnard, Ca.in 1946. I grew up in ventura ca. Except for a year and a half that my family moved to Fillmore, Ca. I went to grade school at Lincoln, Washington and Will Rodgers elementary schools. I went to cabrillo Jr. High for the 7th grade then Moved to Fillmore and attended Fillmore Junior High and Half of the 9th grade. Then moved back to Ventura for the last half of the 9th grade. the only problem with spending the 9th grade in two different towns is that in Fillmore I was in high school, but at Anacapa I was back in Junior High. I attended Buena High School and graduated in 1964. My family was musical. Therefore, I was given several different musical instructions on several Instruments. First I had piano lessons from a neighbor. Then because my mother had played clarinet, I had lessons on that in 6th grade. I also took private Accordion lessons at my home from Frankie Umbro--who was a great friend of my father--when I was about 10 years old. When I started Cabrillo junior high the beginning band teacher put me on Saxophone. Since His wife had been my clarinet teacher, he had me teach the other beginning sax players how to play sax. Of course in Junior high in Ventura and Fillmore I was in Band. In the 8th grade in Fillmore I played the baritone Sax because that was the only one they had that wasn't being used. Christmas that year I got my own alto sax. After High School I went to Ventura college as a Clerical Major. I then went to work at Bank of America. In the spring of 1967, I met my husband. He was a sailor on the USS Norton sound. After I got married I worked for Channel Island State bank. During this time my husband was transferred to the Aircraft Carrier USS Constellation. Shortly after that he went to Viet Nam for 9 months. When the Connie came back she went to the Ship Yard at Bremerton,Wa. I quit my job and moved up to Bremerton with my husband. We were there for about 9 months and then Came back to Ventura. I got pregnant with our daughter in 1971 and we bought our home here in Oxnard. I was a stay at home Mom and Wife for the next 14 years. That is not to say I was not busy I did several things during that time. I was one of the troop moms for my daughter's Brownie and Girl scout troop. For the last year and a half I was coleader. I realy enjoyed that. Part of that time i was also on our neighborhood council. I was also the Admissions chairwoman for a national Philatelic Exhibition which was held annually in Los Angeles. I worked for the County of Ventura and the Private Industry Council of Ventura County as both an intake person and Interviewer for the JTPA program from 1984 to 1989. In 1989 I started Oxnard College as a double Major--Psycology and Art. Later I droped the psycology part and stuck with the art until 2003. I am now on the Executive board for our neighborhood council. Also I have been on the Carnegie Art Museum Cornorstones Board for about the last last 21 years. The Museum owns a little water color of mine, so I have to help make sure it is open when my Granddaughter ever has her children, which--I hope won't be for a long time.LOL my art has been displayed in a competition at a bank in OXnard, ca., where I took second place. At the annual in thousand Oaks where I took First place in 2001 with my series "Outside The Box." 2000 to 2007 my work was displayed at a Artencounter in Las Vegas, Navada. while at that gallery, two of my pieces were chosen to be in the Bond Manor in the "Street of Dreams"--it is a competition for the local Interior Designers; they each get a mansion to decorate and the public pays to tour the exhibit. The money they receive goes to charity. My art has also been displayed at Art Infusion in Los Angeles three different times. In 2009 I had my work exhibited at the James Grey Gallery at Bergmont Station in Santa Monica, Ca. The only place that my art can be seen now is on my website. We have had several medical problems for my husband--he is okay now--and life interfered with my art. I haven't painted since 2009. but since things are getting better in my life I have been working on painting again. I use the name Jan Thompson for my art an...(read more) |
