About Dr. Edwin Patrick Hogan DMD, 61, of Smithton, passed away Saturday, March 17, 2018, on his favorite day of the year, St. Patrick’s Day. Dr. Hogan was born April 2, 1956 and grew up in West Newton, a son of Edwin and Priscilla (King) Hogan. A graduate of Yough High School, Dr. Hogan played football and earned his degree from Lafayette College in Easton before completing his dental studies at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in Philadelphia. Dr. Hogan proudly dedicated his career to the many patients and families who he treated at his private practice of 35 years in Smithton. Dr. Hogan shared a passion for Civil War history which led him to author the book, “Waiting for Jacob”. He was also a longtime member of the Holy Name Society at the former St. Timothy Roman Catholic Church in Smithton and Holy Family Parish in West Newton. In addition to his parents, Dr. Hogan is survived by his loving wife who has been by his side since they first met in the eighth grade, Marianne (Kuszaj) Hogan; daughters, Julie (Michael) Zappone of Greensburg and Emily (Gregory) Erceg of Monroeville. He was a wonderful “Pap” to his grandchildren, Sophia Zappone, Rosalie Zappone, and Jude Erceg. He is also survived by his brothers, Timothy (Kathleen) Hogan and Michael (Roberta) Hogan, all of Greensburg; along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, neighbors, and his beloved pet companions, “Miss Otis” and “Moose”. Private services and arrangements are entrusted to the J. William McCauley, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc., West Newton. Dr. Hogan's family would like to send a special thank you to Nancy, Karen, Shirley, and all of his patients through the years. "Well done, good and faithful servant."
