Graduation Year Class of 1968
Date of Passing Feb 26, 2009
About Roderick (Rod) Allen Gilchrist was born in Detroit, MI on Aug. 3,1950 and passed away peacefully Feb. 26, 2009 following a courageous battle with cancer. Rod received an MFA in painting from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. He began his work in the arts at Shapolsky Gallery and Artists Space in New York, NY; and the New College, San Francisco, CA. He moved to San Francisco in 1994 and helped establish the Portola Family Connections Infrastructure. After devoting several years to the success of Family Connections, Rod accepted the position of Executive Director of the Cartoon Art Museum where he remained for 11 years. His involvement with the museum spurred a subsidy program for small non-profit arts organizations in San Francisco during the dot.com bubble. His innovative art programs for children and youth both at the museum and at community based organizations showed his steadfast commitment to sharing his love of learning through art in whatever form it takes. His commitment to the San Francisco art community will be felt by many generations to come. Rod was knowledgeable, personable and had a keen sense of humor. He was a musician, voracious reader and work traveler. Most of all he was a lover of good friends, good food and great wine. Rod is survived by his beloved sons Andrew and Ryan, his mother Margaret; and his siblings Kim, Kirk, Wendy and his life partner Maryann Fleming.
