About Me Dr. Monique Leslie Akassi is an award winning educator, administrator, author and editor of 7 books and 2 journals, and 2013 "Teacher of the Year" in higher education. She is currently the Department Chairperson of Languages and Literature and Associate Professor of English Composition and Rhetoric. Dr.Akassi is a native from Cincinnati, Ohio and currently lives in Washington DC during the school year. She is a proud mother to her son, Amare, and a devoted wife to her husband, Dr. Clement A. Akassi, author of Postcolonial Discourses and Renegotiations of the Black Identities, Graduate Coordinator and Associate Professor of Spanish and French at one of the most prestigious Carnegie Research Level I Universities in Washington DC--Howard University. Dr. Monique Leslie Akassi earned a Certificate in Women in Education Leadership from Harvard University; a Bachelor of Arts in English and Comparative Literature from the University of Cincinnati; a Master of Arts degree in English Composition and Rhetoric from Wright State University; and a Doctor of Philosophy in English with areas of concentration in English Composition and Rhetoric with minors in Literary Criticism Theory and African American Literature. She was previously Director of Morgan State University's Writing Center, and a full time Tenure Track Assistant Professor of English Composition and Rhetoric at a Carnegie Research Level 1 Institution where she teaches both Graduate and Undergraduate courses. She has previously worked at other esteemed, Universities, including Virginia Union University and Bowie State University in the past. Dr. Akassi is currently working on a forthcoming book with Oxford University Press, Rhetoric of (De)Alienation in W.E.B. Du Bois' Works, which will release in 2015. Moreover, her latest book entitled, Post-Colonial Composition Pedagogy:Using The Culture of Marginalized Students To Teach Writing, published by Robbie Dean Press L.L.C, an award winning peer reviewed publishing company, focuses on academic publications, is a ground-breaking work consisting of 14 chapters by national and international scholars in academia. Dr. Akassi coined Post-Colonial Composition Pedagogy, marking a major paradigm shift in the current methods of teaching instruction in writing courses today. Her first book, Neo Hybrid Pedagogy: An Investigation On Writing Portfolios For African American Students, published by Lambert Academic Publishing company, an international publishing company, is the first quantitative, true experimental design, providing alternative methods of instruction for using writing portfolios in classes for minority students whose first language is not Standard English. In addition, Dr. Monique Akassi was the host and founder of her radio show, The Paradigm Shift (2011-2012), which was geared towards promotimg change in the current educational system to produce stronger results in marginalized students' overall academic performance in academia. She also provides teaching consulting, motivational speaking engagements, training, mentoring, and tutoring.
