About Mrs. Coleman was one of the assistant principal at WSHS when the school first opened. She was one of the main reasons that the Army JROTC program is at Winter Springs. She will be greatly missed.
Karen Whigham Coleman, 60, of Geneva, passed away on Friday, March 30, 2007 at the Moffit Cancer Center in Tampa, after a long struggle with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Karen was surrounded by her loving family at the time of her passing. Karen was born May 12, 1946 in Opp, Alabama. She graduated from Seminole High School in 1964. Karen received her B.S.Ed. from Troy State College and her M.Ed. from the University of Central Flor-ida. Karen began her teaching career in Alabama. After teaching a few years, she returned to Seminole County. She served in numerous capacities within Seminole County Public Schools including teacher, Coordinator of Community Relations and Public Information, Assistant Principal, and Principal of Crooms Academy, Seminole High School, and Geneva Elementary School. In 1980, Karen was awarded Outstanding Teacher in Gifted Education, and she was also named the Florida State Teacher of the Year. She was very active at the local level on various committees, both within the school district and the community at-large. Karen is survived by her loving husband, Roger B. Coleman, their children Sherrie (Craig) Stuart and
Barry (Lynn) Coleman, and three grandchildren Casey and Allyson Stuart and Kolby Coleman. Karen is also survived by her father Julian B. Whigham, four brothers, Julian E. (Fran) Whigham, Frank (Beth) Whigham, John (Kit) Whigham, Mark (Claudia) Whigham, and sister Rebecca (David) Smith. Karen is predeceased by her mother Mildred E. Whigham and brother Thomas E. Whigham. A gathering for family and friends will be held Thursday, April 5, 2007 from 3-4PM, followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 4PM, both to be held at Seminole High School Auditorium, 2701 Ridgewood Avenue, Sanford, FL 32773. Donations may be made in honor of Karen Whigham Coleman to the Foundation for Seminole County Public Schools.
