About David Tod Hollister

David Tod Hollister David Tod Hollister, 57, died Saturday, March 13. Dave was born May 31, 1952 in Elmhurst, Illinois. He graduated from Winter Haven High School in 1970 and received a Bachelor of Design in Architecture from the University of Florida in 1974. He received his Master's of Architecture from FAMU in 1980, and as a student found a love for adventure through his first trip to Somalia. Following graduation from FAMU, he worked for Barnett Fronczak Architects in Tallahassee. In 1984 he moved to Nairobi, Kenya, and worked for USAID and the Kenya National Cooperative Housing Union, which strengthened housing cooperatives and financial institutions to implement low-cost housing projects. He and his wife Beth had two beautiful sons during their stay in Nairobi. He was a member of the Nairobi Sailing Club and enjoyed sailing the lakes and coast of Kenya. The family then moved to Coconut Grove, Florida, in 1989, where Dave was employed by CRSS Architects developing architectural programs for the Dade County school system. Missing the adventures found in a foreign country, in 1992 he accepted a position at the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center in Bangkok, Thailand where he stayed for ten years as director in charge of disaster mitigation programs. The family returned to Tallahassee in 2002 where he again worked for Barnett Fronczak Architects. In 2005, he began employment in Jakarta, Indonesia, working on UN disaster mitigation programs. He was planning on returning to a new UN position in Bangladesh this spring. Sailing his boat and sitting on his dock at Oyster Bay were two of his favorite activities. Dave loved life, and he shared his time, culinary skills, energy, and conviviality with many friends and family members. His parents, Ralph and Sue Hollister, his first wife, Eileen Twardzick Hollister, and his sister, Peggy Hollister, preceded him in death. Dave is survived by his son Samuel Hollister. He left behind many cousins, in-laws, and friends he stayed in touch with throughout the years from all over the world. Memorial services will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 20, at First Presbyterian Church in Tallahassee, followed by a reception. A graveside gathering at Roselawn to share memories of Dave and son Tom will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dave's name to The American Red Cross, memo line: International Relief Fund, 1115 Easterwood Dr., Tallahassee, FL 32311.
