Emilio and I became good friends in high school and worked at Elmwood Country Club together (along with John Williams, Gene McKenna, Al Oliveira, John McMahon, Andy Kasow, Tom Dungan, Sid Kreitzer, and several others from WPHS) , every Summer in High School and through college.
Poncho and his family (His Mom, Dad, Sister and Aunt) fled Cuba after Batista was ousted by Fidel Castro. His dad, who had been the manager of the Santiago Airport (Santiago was/is the 2nd largest city in Cuba) before fleeing that country, was able to get work in retail sales at a high end gift shop in Rye, where he worked until his retirement. They moved into the Garden apartments on Soundview Ave and Poncho started 8th grade in White Plains. After he graduated WPHS, his family moved to an apartment on Hartsdale Ave in Hartsdale, where they lived until retirement.
He and I became even better and closer friends in college. We eventually shared an off-campus apartment in NYC from ‘67-‘68 with 3 Sigma Chi fraternity brothers. That was the same year as the riots at Columbia. Later, after college and we had both started working, we shared a Summer rental at the Jersey shore (Long Beach Island) for a couple of Summers along with Ernie Matson, John Williams, Andy Kasow, Gene McKenna, John McMahon and also shared a ski cottage near Hunter Mountain with a couple of the above and a couple of Fraternity Brothers from Columbia. Yes, those were the days! We were all single,
