Shane Monahan

Former Major League Baseball player, Seattle Mariners

What is Shane Monahan known for?

Shane Hartland Monahan, born August 12, 1974, in Syosset, New York, is a distinguished former Major League Baseball (MLB) player. He is notably a graduate of Wheeler High School in Marietta, Georgia. Playing as an outfielder and designated hitter, Monahan played his entire career for the Seattle Mariners from 1998 to 1999. His MLB career statistics include a .235 batting average, 4 home runs, and 28 runs batted in.

Monahan's prowess on the baseball field wasn't limited to his professional career - he had an impressively successful collegiate career at Clemson University. His record-breaking performances include leading the NCAA in hits (137) and runs (97) in the 1994 season, which remains an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) record. He also set single-season ACC records of 330 at-bats and 75 game appearances during 1994.

His achievements at Clemson include being named ACC Player of the Week twice in 1994 and the ACC Tournament MVP. He was also named to the All-ACC Tournament team in 1994 and 1995. Furthermore, he was named a two-time All-American in the ABCA, Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, and NCBWA polls in the 1994 and 1995 seasons. In 2011, his abundant contributions were officially recognized when he was inducted into the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame.

Monahan's professional baseball career began with the Seattle Mariners, being picked in the second round of the 1995 amateur entry draft. While his career saw him playing both with the Mariners and their minor league affiliates, his journey also led him to minor league teams of the Cincinnati Reds, San Diego Padres, Colorado Rockies, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Kansas City Royals. He finally concluded his professional career in 2003 playing for the independent Atlantic City Surf of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.

It's worth noting that Shane Monahan isn't the only sports star in his family. His father, Hartland Monahan, maternal grandfather, Bernie Geoffrion (credited with inventing the slap shot in hockey), and great-grandfather, Howie Morenz, are all notable figures in the National Hockey League.
