About June 7, 2007 Joseph M. Byrne Jr., 73, of Syracuse, died at home Thursday after a long illness. He graduated from Christian Brothers Academy in 1952, received a BA from LeMoyne College in 1958, and a MS from Syracuse University in 1973. He taught second ary school English for 22 years, retiring from Westhill High School in 1987 where he served as English Department Chairperson and Girls Varsity Basketball Coach. He joined the New York Air National Guard in 1958. He served with the 174TFG in Phalsbourg, France during the Berlin Crisis and in 1968 he returned to active duty with them at Cannon Air Force Base in Clovis, New Mexico. In 1986, he transferred to the 152nd Tactical Control Group at Hancock Field. He retired in 1994 as Deputy Commander for Logistics of the 152nd with the rank of Colonel. He was a communicant of Holy Family Church. He was predeceased by his grandson, Benjamin Joseph Martin; and two brothers, William C. and Lawrence E. Byrne. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary E. (Kerwin) Byrne; three sons, Joseph M. Byrne III (Kathleen), Camillus, NY, Dr. James M. Byrne (Dr. Lia Guina-Byrne), University Place, WA, and Jon M. Byrne, Bradenton , FL: one daughter, Julie M. Martin, Camillus, NY; four grandchildren, Eireann E. and Meghan C. Byrne of Camillus, NY, Hayley E. and Catherine B. Martin, Camillus, NY; two brothers, Peter A. (Margaret), and David J. Byrne; one sister, Catherine B. (Edward) Erwin; his sister-in-law, Ann Tague Byrne; several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian burial will be Monday at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church. Burial in Onondaga Co. Veterans Cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. at Whelan Bros. Funeral Home, 3700 W.
