Barry Moore

Major League Baseball pitcher[11]

What is Barry Moore known for?

Barry Moore, whose full name is Robert Barry Moore, is a former Major League Baseball player and an alumni of West Rowan High School, Mount Ulla, North Carolina. Born on April 3, 1943, in Statesville, North Carolina, he started his career as a left-handed pitcher and was signed as an amateur free agent by the Washington Senators before the 1962 season.

Moore had an impressive career spanning several years. He made his major league debut on May 29, 1965, with the Washington Senators, and his last MLB appearance was on October 1, 1970, for the Chicago White Sox. Throughout his career, he also played for the Cleveland Indians (in 1970), and his MLB statistics were pretty impressive with a win-loss record of 26–37, an earned run average of 4.16 and 278 strikeouts. Furthermore, he led the Eastern League with 155 bases on balls in 165 innings while playing for the York White Roses in 1964.

Moore's finest major league effort was on April 30, 1967, where he pitched a one-hit complete game shutout at D.C. Stadium against the Minnesota Twins. An interesting tidbit from his career was that, despite only pitching 141 innings in 1970, Moore tied for third among American League hurlers with 9 hit batsmen - quite an achievement considering the other four pitchers who were tied with him took an average of 240.1 innings to hit the same number of batters.

Moore did have a tendency to be wild on the mound, as evidenced by the fact that he gave up 300 walks in just 599.2 innings pitched, for a BB/9IP of 4.50, which was much higher than the American League average at that time. His career totals for 143 games played (140 as a pitcher) include a 26-37 record, 99 games started, 8 complete games, 1 shutout, 14 games finished, and 3 saves. He allowed 277 earned runs in his 599.2 innings, giving him a lifetime ERA of 4.16.

Throughout his career, Moore was traded several times, including from the Indians to the White Sox in exchange for Buddy Bradford and Tommie Sisk before the trade deadline on June 15, 1970. Later, after a 3–9 campaign with a 5.30 earned run average (ERA), he was dealt from the White Sox to the New York Yankees for Bill Robinson on December 3, 1970.

In conclusion, Barry Moore, with his remarkable record as a pitcher, constitutes a standout addition to the notable alumni of West Rowan High School, North Carolina, and a proud symbol of Statesville, North Carolina heritage.
