About Me | My resume reads like a tour of Macy's, Herald Square. After a summer on a kibbutz ( the same one Bernie Sanders worked on a few years earlier,) I entered the Air Force in the fall of 1968. Spent my 19th b-day in Dallas, and my 20th a few miles south of the Mekong River, stationed at Udorn Royal Thai AFB. Only flew over Nam coming and going. Worked in communications, doing everything from operating a secure voice network, to being a disc jockey on AFTN (thanks to the little work I had done at WBAB, while in high school.) Came away from it slightly damaged; lost a lot of friends. Restationed to Athenai Airbase, Athens, Greece. Sweet assignment. Everything Mrs's Langford, Robinson and Foley taught re. Mythology fit in perfectly with the terrain. Met my wife on the Acropolis, at a friend's home in Plaka. Lived on the beach and drove a '59 Merc, 220s. Life was good. Susan and I hitched up to her home in England in the summer of '71, my discharge coming at 2 years, 9 months, 15 days and a few hours. We wandered around the UK for a bit, afterwhich I returned home. Worked for a minor "Family" player for a while, started school at Suffolk County Community College, and spent nearly every break on the road. Covered masses of miles, and did some odd work during the first years out of service. Hitched cross-country twice, riding in freightcars, and every other form of transportation.Went back to Europe several times. Interrupted school in October, 1973, to go to Israel with the outbreak of the Yom Kippur War. Walked guard duty and milked cows on the same kibbutz I'd lived in '68. Returned to Suffolk in '74, and did some acting/theater work. Moved into Queens and went to work for "Chargit" the first telephone/ticketing agency. Could have made a fortune, but I'd enrolled in NYU's journalism program, and my newspaper years were in front of me. Susan and I finally married in 1977, and with family considerations, I sought the security of a good insurance plan with the UFT. Taught (what else?) high school English in New York City's East (Spanish) Harlem. Drove cabs in the city (I think I was voted my senior class "worst driver") during Julys and spent Augusts back in Greece with Susan. Also put in the mandatory time on the analyst's couch. Oh well! Susan went to law school following the loss of our firstborn, and I went on to complete my Master's, writing a play during that time about my Southeast Asian experiences. Saw it produced on Broadway...120th Street and Bdw'y at Columbia University's Dodge Hall. The next year, I began law school, and after a brief stint with the Brooklyn D.A's office, found myself at The Legal Aid Society. Spent three decades tryng cases and fighting for innocent men and women. There is no finer feeling in the world than to return a person's freedom to them. I represented 14,286 clients in my time and liberated more people than my father's WWII infantry platoon. I guess even a public servant is entitled to retire at some point. Eventually we had a couple of kids. Heather was born in late 1988, and Aran 3 years later. Both are wonderful. Sometimes I see myself as them; othertimes, as my parents, looking at me. Being their father has been the single best thing about my life. I've tried a number of hobbies:I keep the old '66 Weber Performer on the deck; fish the surf of Robert Moses in the fall; walked into the Grand Canyon for my 50th birthday; dove the Red Sea a few years ago. Have finally taken to fly-fishing, and love it. Susan and I celebrate 40 years in June. She won't let me smoke cigars in the house, but that's my only complaint. There's always beer in the fridge, and a lively red in need of uncorking. Stop by if you're...(read more) |
