In the field of education, Johnson began his career as a visiting professor of economics at Southern Methodist University in 1986 and 1987. He then moved on to become an associate professor at the University of Mississippi from 1987 to 2000. In 2006, he stepped up as a professor and chair of the management and information systems department at Jon M. Huntsman School of Business.
