Blair Buswell (1975)

American artist

What is Blair Buswell (1975) known for?

Blair Buswell (born 1956) is an accomplished American artist, specializing in sports sculptures, who hails from North Ogden, Utah. His formal art education began at Ricks College and he later transferred to Brigham Young University on an art scholarship where he also showcased his athleticism by playing as a running back for the Cougars football team.

Post-graduation in 1982, Buswell has made significant contributions to the world of art and sports. He found a perfect marriage of his twin passions in sculpting, leading to an impressive artistic journey. His notable works include sculpting almost 100 busts for the Pro Football Hall of Fame since 1983, featuring footballers like former BYU teammate Steve Young, John Madden, Pat Bowlen, and Randy Moss.

Buswell's wide range of artistry not only graces sports arenas but has also found its place in other halls of fame. A statue of Jack Nicklaus was sculpted by him for the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame in Augusta, Georgia, and a statue of basketball great Oscar Robertson stands tall at Cincinnati University, thanks to his craftsmanship. His mastery goes beyond sports personalities, as is evident in his sculptures of Charlton Heston, Harold B. Lee, Thomas S. Monson, Robert Neyland, W.A. Criswell, and San Carlos Borromeo.

Buswell's significant contributions include creating the NFL Special Service Award and medallions for Super Bowls XIX, XX, and XXI. A notable part of his portfolio is the creation of the Doak Walker Award, given annually to the top college running back in the country. His dedication to his art and talent was honored when a bronze statue of Coach John Wooden, sculpted by him, was unveiled at UCLA's newly renovated Pauley Pavilion in 2012. Buswell currently resides in Alpine, Utah and is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
