Shannon (Johnson) Holmes
Class of 1987
Judge Shannon A. Holmes is a graduate of Washington-Marion Magnet High School, Dillard University and the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. She is currently pursuing a doctorate degree at the Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit.
Judge Holmes has had a distinguished career in public service. She has served as a Federal Investigator with the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, where she investigated civil rights complaints and facilitated training for employers with respect to federal statutes that govern the employer-employee relationship.
In 1999, Judge Holmes joined the City of Detroit’s Law Department as an Assistant Corporation Counsel in its Labor and Employment Law Division. While serving in this capacity, she represented the City of Detroit in civil litigation, labor arbitrations, police and fire trial board hearings, civil service hearings, Michigan Employment Relations Commission hearings, and contract negotiations. She also served as the Legislative Assistant Corporation Counsel and represented the Law Department during Detroit City Council sessions.
Judge Holmes has served as the Chief of Staff to the Honorable Mayor Dave Bing and as Director of the City of Detroit’s Human Resources Department. She has also served as an Administrative Hearings Officer with the Department of Administrative Hearings. She is a former officer with the Michigan National Guard Judge Advocate General Corps.
Judge Holmes is a member of Renaissance Baptist Church where she serves as a member of the Ministerial Staff, Youth Mentor, and Women’s Ministry Facilitator. She is affiliated with several civic, community, religious and professional organizations including: The State Bar of Michigan, The Association of Black Judges of Michigan, The Wolverine Bar Association and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
The Honorable Governor Rick Snyder appointed Judge Shannon A. Holmes to the 36th District Court on November 22, 2011.
She is the wife of Dr. Edwin H. Holmes and mother to Troy, Jordan and Joi Ivory.
