What is Geoff Crompton known for?

Geoff Crompton, often stylized as "Geoff" or "Geff", was born on July 4, 1955, in Burlington, North Carolina. He is widely recognized as a professional basketball player and a notable alumnus of Walter M. Williams High School in Burlington. After his high school career, he went on to play for the University of North Carolina under the guidance of Hall of Fame coach Dean Smith from 1973 to 1978, although his playing time there was limited due to academic and weight issues.

In the 1978 NBA draft, Crompton was picked up in the fourth round, 70th overall, by the Kansas City Kings. However, his rights were traded to the Denver Nuggets before the start of the season. His NBA career saw him play for several teams, including the Denver Nuggets, Montana Golden Nuggets, Portland Trail Blazers, Milwaukee Bucks, San Antonio Spurs, Puerto Rico Coquis, and finally the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Dubbed a "basketball nomad", Crompton had stints in both the NBA and Continental Basketball Association (CBA). His professional career was highlighted in 1984 when he was named the CBA's Most Valuable Player while playing for the Puerto Rico Coquis. Furthermore, he led the league in rebounding in 1985, and back in 1973, he was named a second-team Parade All-American.

His NBA statistics included 99 points, 139 rebounds, and 28 assists. You can delve more into his sports career through his profiles on NBA.com and Basketball-Reference.com.

Post his professional career, Geoff settled in Tallahassee, Florida, where he managed a restaurant. He also worked for many years at UNC's summer basketball camps. Sadly, Crompton passed away from leukemia on January 7, 2002.
