after graduation no company would hire me because they said i would go to military. so for 1 yr i managed a gas station on rt 66. i was called to go to jeff barrracks on feb 18, 1943 and wanted to be an aircraft mechanic because of airport north st.louis. i went to sheppard fied ft, wood tx for basic and extended training. i failed aircraft because of chlostrobia. because i took typing very slow at vpsh iwent to teletype school at chanute field, champaign il. then to reno afb & played ball. then to fresno ca japanese replacement camp and prepare all the raw food for mess hall. then to camp kilmer and got on queen mary to scotland & then to manchester replacemnt can & then to tents north of london. finally i sent to london us army largest com ctr and became a teletype mechanic. even went to british school to learn to repair there equip and i did some crypto maint. then i went to camp picket an jb and discharged jan 6 1946. after a yr in st,louis i was selected to do dame thin in st. l signal ctr as only repairman. the transfered to granite city army depot to repair all machines in st l. area. i was sent to ft devens to learn 2 crypto machines and came ot with the highest score ever 97.5. back to granite and repaired crypo st,l,area, ft lenard wood, kansas city. fts leavenworth and riley. transfred to alexandria, va to amc and became non gratuate enginear desining com centers to be next to computers, expanded insid rooms aor directed new additions. retired at 59 with 39 1/2 yrs svc. went to work for small comm co.doing same all over us army bases. became vp and president sold co. to adp co and became gm of comm and finally retired in va. wife of 47 yrs died. we had son 2 daughters. all of this i credit to vphs as a slow typist. god bless all vphs livong an those died'. joe gottfried.
