Kirby Grant, born as Kirby Grant Hoon Jr. on November 24, 1911, in Butte, Montana, is a celebrated figure in the American film and television industry. He was best known for playing the title role in the adventure television series Sky King.

Grant was a child prodigy violinist, continuing his passion for music to become a professional singer and bandleader. His acting career kick-started when he won the Gateway to Hollywood talent-search contest in 1939, which landed him a movie contract. Initially known by the pseudonym "Robert Stanton", he later chose to use his first and middle names for his professional career.

Grant had a wide-ranging career that spanned multiple studios. Some of his most notable works included Blondie Goes Latin and Destination Tokyo. His baritone voice and charismatic on-screen presence landed him roles in B musicals, including two features with Universal's singing star Gloria Jean. He also starred in a variety of comedies and western series.

In 1949, Grant starred in a series of Mounted-Police adventures for Monogram Pictures, which included his famous companion "Chinook the Wonder Dog". Soon after, television came calling, and Grant found his most iconic role in the series Sky King in 1952. He played the role of rancher-pilot Schuyler "Sky" King, rescuing people and fighting bad guys from his airplane. He starred in this serial for the entirety of its run from 1952, and later from 1956-1959, filming an impressive 72 episodes.
