About Reflections of Life

“To Everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under the Heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:1

A Time to Be Born

Kevin Lamont Randolph, Sr. affectionately known as “Kip” was born in Chicago Illinois on June 5th, 1949 to the late Lillian Hall-Malachi. He was the first of 3 children. At a young age he was surrounded in love by Rev. John (Uncle) and Ruth Hall-Thurston (Aunt) who nurtured him during his formative years and beyond; Judge Hall Jr. (Uncle) who served as his Advisor, and Alphonso Lee Malachi (Stepfather) who provided a stable home for him during his teenage years.

A Time to Build Up

Kevin was christened at Corpus Christi Catholic Church on February 5th 1950 where he served as an Altar Boy. He went on to join New Covenant Missionary Baptist church and was Baptized on December 31st, 1978 by his Uncle the late Rev. John L. Thurston.

Kip served the Lord with all his heart and soul. He knew the bible fluently and had a keen ability to interpret the scriptures and could quote any part of it at any given moment due to his Seminary studies. His religious foundation set the tone for his life. God truly shined on him. Kevin was a member through the leadership of not only his Uncle but his Cousin Rev. Stephen J. Thurston, Sr. who was like a brother to him. During his time at New Covenant he served on the Bus Ministry, sang in the Choir, and volunteered with the Girls Scouts.

Kevin attended Our Lady of the Gardens and St. Susanna Private Schools. He then went on to St. Jude Seminary, Bremen High School, and finally Thornton Township High School where he graduated.

On September 23rd, 1968 Kevin enlisted in the United States Navy as a Signalman Seamen and was stationed in Rhode Island. During his time of service he traveled the world and received the National Defense Service Medal. He dedicated 4 years to his country and was honorably discharged on September 22nd,1972. He then went on to pursue a career in Auto Mechanics by attending and matriculating a degree from the Rhode Island Trade Shop School.

Finally Kevin attended Chicago State University and received his bachelors Degree in Education where he realized his purpose and passion was in teaching.

A Time to Love

Kevin was introduced to the love of his life Feneather Droughns by his Aunt the late Ruth Hall Thurston at New Covenant’s first Debutante Ball. It was love at first sight. To know them is to know that God truly made them for each other. They were inseparable and wouldn’t have it any other way. They married June 5th, 1971 and to this union two children were born Kevin Jr. and LaShaundra Reneé.

He was an avid reader, writer, and poet, and he was known to hide inspirational letters or poems in places where his wife and kids could find them when they least expected it. He was full of surprises. Because of his wit, wisdom and sense of humor, these cards, letters and poems now serve as priceless memories of his love for his family.

A Time for Every Purpose Under the Heavens

Kip was gainfully employed as an Auto Mechanic at Bauer Buick and then went on to be a bus driver at Pace Transit Authority for 20 years. In 1994 he went back to his alma mater, Thornton Township High School in Harvey Illinois where over the course of 20 years he taught Wood-shop, Electricity, Computer Repair and later retired in 2014.
