About Carl D. Reardon

Carl D. Reardon, 59, a lifelong resident of Swampscott, died unexpectedly July 29, 2008, while attending the 38th AFSCME International Convention in San Francisco.

He was born in Lynn, the son of the late John R. and Rose M. (Pinto) Reardon.

He was raised in Swampscott and was a graduate of Swampscott High School, Class of 1966. In 1970, he graduated from Northeast Institute with a degree in refrigeration and air conditioning.

Mr. Reardon was a senior custodian for Swampscott High School, retiring this year after 31 years of service. He was a friend to all the kids at the high school and was known as â%uFFFD%uFFFDCaptain Carl.â%uFFFD%uFFFD He was president of Swampscott Local 2610, executive vice president of Council 93 AFSCME and vice president of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO. He was a member of the North Shore Labor Council.

Active in Swampscott politics, when running for any office, Mr. Reardon was always one of the top vote getters. As a Town Meeting member, he was known for â%uFFFD%uFFFDMr. Moderator, I move the question.â%uFFFD%uFFFD At Town Meeting in the 1980s, he proposed funds from the town to purchase lottery tickets. If won, the proceeds would help fund the town deficit. It became a question on the game show â%uFFFD%uFFFDJeopardy.â%uFFFD%uFFFD Mr. Reardon was a member of Swampscottâ%uFFFD%uFFFDs Atlantic Number 1 Hand Tub. When first formed in the 1950s, he was an original member of Swampscott Little League baseball. He was an avid Big Blue Football fan.

Mr. Reardon is survived by his sister, Jean Reardon of Swampscott; his aunt, Ida Pinto of Swampscott; and four stepbrothers, Nathan and Steven Weiner of New Hampshire and Alan and Robert Wiener of Florida.

He was the stepson of the late Sandra Weiner-Reardon.

He also leaves several cousins, friends and union brothers.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, August 16, at 11 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church, Swampscott. Burial will be in Swampscott Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Memorial visiting hours are Friday, August 15, 4-8 p.m. in Solimine, Landergan & Richardson Funeral Home, 67 Ocean St. (Route 1A), Lynn.
