What is Tariqh Akoni known for?
Tariqh Akoni is a highly accomplished performing and session guitarist, songwriter, and musical director, best known for his work with renowned recording artist Josh Groban. Born and raised in Santa Barbara, California, Tariqh grew up in a musically diverse home, exposing him early on to various genres from Carlos Santana to Mac Davis to Sly and the Family Stone.
After high school, he pursued his passion for the guitar and contemporary classical composition, studying initially at the University of California at San Diego. He eventually transferred to the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston, where he enriched his class study with private lessons from acclaimed jazz figures Jerry Bergonzi and Rick Peckham. He honed his unique sound and found his musical voice through nightly gigging in Boston clubs, playing in styles ranging from blues, jazz, to rock.
During his career, Tariqh has compiled an extensive and diverse portfolio, having worked with world-renowned musical artists such as Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Elton John, Herbie Hancock, Bette Midler, and many more. Known as a "six-string virtuouso", he has proven his versatility and prowess in many genres, including classical, flamenco, and rock music.
Apart from his studio work, Tariqh has also graced the stages of various notable television shows. He has made appearances on shows such as the NAACP Image Awards, the Annual Grammy Awards, American Idol, and Good Morning America, among others. He has performed with a multitude of musical talents on these platforms, such as Huey Lewis and the News on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Christina Aguilera on Saturday Night Live.
In terms of academia, Tariqh has also served as the chair of the Guitar Department at the L.A. Music Academy. He continues to be a significant figure in the music industry, inspiring many emerging talents with his passion, dedication, and incredible skills.
