Obituary For Mary Jo Wasilewski Kopas 06/25/1942 - 08/03/2011 Mary Jo Kopas, age 69, of Brooklyn passed away Wednesday, August 3 at home with her loving family by her side. Mary Jo was born June 25, 1942 in Wyandotte, MI, the daughter of Stanley and Mary (Derer) Wasilewski. On October 17, 1964 she married Anthony Kopas at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Wyandotte. Mary Jo was a 1960 graduate of Wyandotte Roosevelt High School. For 30 years, she and her husband Anthony owned and operated Romulus Hardware Store, Romulus, MI, before retiring in 1996 and moving out to the lake where she enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Shrine in Brooklyn. Mary Jo enjoyed bird watching, reading, and sewing, and was an avid golfer. In addition to her husband, Mary Jo is survived by her son, Ron (Becki) Kopas of Romulus; her daughters Shelly (Norman) Briones and Gigi Kopas of Louisville, KY and Elaine (Scott) Baker of Portland, OR; her brother Stanley (Carol) Wasilewski of Garden City; and her grandchildren Kaitlyn, Carson, and Camden Briones, Ty and Quinn Baker. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Sandy Funchar, and a son, Tony, who passed away in infancy. Visitation will be held Friday, August 5 from 2 -8 p.m. and Saturday, August 6 from 9 - 11 a.m. at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes. Vigil for Mary Jo will be celebrated Friday at 5 p.m. She will lie in state at St. Joseph Catholic Shrine, Brooklyn from 1:30 p.m. until the time of the Funeral Mass at 2 p.m. with Fr. Dave Hudgins as celebrant. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Fund.
