Mary Elizabeth Nelson died peacefully on June 2, 2011. She was born in Wyandotte Michigan on October 6, 1908. She was the third of four daughters born to Fannie and Leroy Adair. She is survived by her son, Emil Leroy (Patricia) Nelson and a dear nephew James (Karen) Pitts. She is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was married on Dec. 29, 1937 to Emil August Nelson. Her husband predeceased her in a tragic accident in 1944. Another accident claimed the life of her daughter Alma May Nelson in 1990. She is also predeceased by her parents and her three sisters, Frances, Margaret and Matilda. Except for the last few years, Mary lived in Wyandotte all of her life and was very proud of her community. She graduated from Wyandotte Roosevelt High School in 1927 ( 1926) in one of the first graduating classes. Her parents and grandparents also lived all of their lives in Wyandotte and were staunch members of the First United Methodist Church. Mary attended Albion College and graduated in 1931 with a teaching certificate and a degree in English. She then worked as a substitute teacher before her marriage. Later, after her youngest child started school she returned to the classroom full time as a third grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary in Wyandotte where she touched many lives until she retired in 1971 at the age of 63. She obtained her Masters degree from Wayne State University. Her main interests were centered in her church, The First United Methodist Church of Wyandotte. She became a member of this church while still a very young child and throughout her life was very involved in church activities. She was an active and enthusiastic member of the American Association of University Women, Wyandotte Historical Society, West Mound Cemetery Board, Michigan Retired School Personnel, and The Friends of Bacon Library. Travel and adventure were very important to her and she traveled extensively both in the United States and abroad. One of her great pleasures was watching the birds at her bird feeder. She loved flowers and enjoyed working in her large garden. She also loved poetry and music and frequently attended the Detroit Symphony Orchestra programs.
