Charles Richard "Dick" Cranwell, born on July 26, 1942, in Ceredo-Kenova, West Virginia, is a prominent American lawyer and politician. In his earlier years, Cranwell attended Richlands High School in Tazewell County, Virginia, where he made a remarkable reputation as the varsity quarterback, leading the state in touchdown passes in his senior year. Proving to be versatile, he also played as a kicker in college.

After securing a Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1965, Cranwell went ahead to earn his Juris Doctor from the University of Richmond School of Law in 1968. Following his academic achievements, he joined the Virginia State Bar and started his practice in Roanoke County, Virginia.
