Devon Johnson

Marshall Thundering Herd football Carolina Panthers

What is Devon Johnson known for?

Devon Johnson was a prominent American football player, playing as both a running back and a fullback. Born on July 28, 1993, he hailed from Richlands, Virginia where he attended Richlands High School.

Johnson demonstrated exceptional football skills early in his high school career. As a junior, he rushed for over 1,400 yards and scored 22 touchdowns, leading his school to the Group AA Division 3 state title game. He also had a distinguished defensive performance as a linebacker, making a total of 216 tackles and 16 sacks in his high school career.

He committed to Marshall University in 2011 on a football scholarship, declining an offer from the University of Virginia. Following a switch from linebacker to tight end and finally to running back and fullback, Johnson had an incredible junior year. In this season, he recorded ten games with over 100 rushing yards, a school record. His efforts earned him the distinction of being a Doak Walker Award finalist and a first-team All-Conference USA selection.

Regrettably, his senior year was hampered by injuries, limiting his on-field contributions. He ran for 593 yards in seven games and made five touchdowns.

Post-college, Johnson was signed by the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent in 2016. Sadly, he didn't get to play for the team and passed away at the young age of 25 on November 6, 2018.
