About Diane Pritchard
April 15, 1953-October 15, 2014

Portland

Diane Pritchard, born April 15, 1953, in Portland, Oregon, died at her home in Vale, Oregon, on October 15, 2014.

She is survived by her husband, Vern Pritchard; her son, Nathan Pritchard and his wife Ali; her brother, Dan Roloff; and her niece, Kristina McMillen.

Diane grew up in Milwaukie, Oregon and graduated from Rex Putnam High School in 1971. Diane met and married Vern Pritchard while attending Oregon State University. She graduated from Oregon State in 1977 with a B.S. in Wildlife Science. In 1996, she received a Master of Arts degree in Anthropology from The University of Nevada Reno.

Diane started her career with the Bureau of Reclamation in Duchesne, Utah as a wildlife and geology technician for the Central Utah water development project. She spent the majority of her career as an archaeologist for the Bureau of Land Management in Vale, Oregon.

Her job was to preserve and protect the cultural and historic resources of the Vale district. One of her special discoveries was an ancient Clovis site, the first found in Malheur County. She worked closely with the Native American community to preserve their history. At the same time her experience on major construction projects in Utah guided her approach to projects throughout her career. Diane was well respected within the BLM archaeological community in Oregon and Washington.

Diane loved being outdoors where her work took her to investigate sites throughout Eastern Oregon. In her free time she mushed with her huskies, kayaked the lakes and streams of Oregon, photographed sunrises, and travelled with her family and friends. New York became a favorite place to visit while her son Nathan attended West Point. Diane was an active member of the Vale SDA church and shared her knowledge of history and archaeology with her community.

Diane’s organization, practical manner, generous spirit and genuine friendship will be missed by family, friends, and co-workers.

Services will be held Saturday, November 1st at 3:00 p.m. in the Vale Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 1554 Hwy 20-26 east of Vale, OR. A private interment will be at the Greenwood Cemetery in Bend, Oregon. Condolences can be made to the family at www.lienkaemper-thomason.com.
