About A convicted murderer serving a life sentence at the Oregon State Penitentiary died Monday, authorities say.

Leroy Earp, 77, was taken to a Salem-area hospital Tuesday, Aug. 15, for medical care, at some point became unresponsive then died Monday afternoon, according to the Oregon Department of Corrections. It's unclear why he was brought to the hospital.

Earp's death appears to be of natural causes, the department said. Oregon State Police is investigating his death.

Earp was sentenced to life in prison in July 1982 in Clackamas County Circuit Court for the stabbing death of Ann Peery, a Rex Putnam High School teacher killed in her home. Earp at the time worked as a janitor at the school and was on parole for a previous murder.

Earp received a prison sentence in March 1966 for the murder of a Portland woman discovered nude in the trunk of his car after she had been strangled. He was sentenced to the Oregon State Penitentiary then as well.

A year later, Earp and five other inmates tried to break out of prison with the aid of homemade shotguns and a forklift. In 1972, he did manage to escape while on a supervised trip to pick up a shuffleboard for the prison.

He was caught two days later.

Earp was granted parole in 1980. During his latest stint in prison in 1994, prison officials said another inmate stabbed Earp in the chest and stomach.
