Service description Served 26 years of combined active and ready reserve duty, from 1967 retiring in 1994 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer, Qualified in Submarines (SS). Doug served aboard 4 different submarines at sea, two WW II era conventional submarines, one Nuclear Powered Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarine, and one Nuclear Attack Submarine. During his service, he earned the right to wear the coveted "qualified in submarines" insignia the "Dolphins," and the FBM Deterrent Patrol Pin, with 6 patrols. He earned the Meritorious Commendation Medal (2 awards), The Special Expeditionary Medal, The Battle Efficiency Medal (2 Awards), The Navy Reserve Medal (1 Award), The Navy God Conduct Medal (2 Awards), The Navy Reserve Good Conduct Medal (3 Awards) and the Navy Sea Service Medal, and the National Defense Medal (2 Awards). Some additional duties include being the "Command Senior Enlisted Advisor" for many of his commands, as wells as serving as the Executive Officer for a Shore Maintenance Activiy.
