What is Wilt Chamberlain known for?

Wilt Chamberlain was a legendary American basketball player, born on August 21, 1936, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S. He was a graduate of Overbrook High School in Philadelphia and went on to play for the University of Kansas from 1956 to 1958. He was drafted in 1959 as a territorial pick by the Philadelphia Warriors.

Chamberlain had a distinguished career within the NBA, playing for the Harlem Globetrotters, the Philadelphia/San Francisco Warriors, the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Los Angeles Lakers. He even had a stint as a coach for the San Diego Conquistadors in 1973-1974.

Standing 7 ft 1 in tall and weighing 275 lb, Chamberlain was a commanding presence on the court. His career statistics are impressive with 31,419 points (30.1 points per game), 23,924 rebounds (22.9 rebounds per game), and 4,643 assists (4.4 assists per game). During his career, Chamberlain was a 2-time NBA champion, 4-time NBA Most Valuable Player, and 13-time NBA All-Star. He was named NBA All-Star Game MVP in 1960 and was part of the All-NBA First Team seven times. He was an 11-time NBA rebounding champion and set records for the highest number of points (100) and rebounds (55) in a single game. Chamberlain's number 13 jersey was retired by four teams - Harlem Globetrotters, Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers, and Los Angeles Lakers.

Apart from his NBA honors, Chamberlain was also the NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player in 1957, and a 2-time Consensus first-team All-American. His number 13 jersey was retired by the Kansas Jayhawks, where he began his journey to basketball stardom.

Chamberlain passed away on October 12, 1999, in Los Angeles, California, but his contributions to the sport are still celebrated today. His accomplishments and legacy are recognized in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
