What is Malik Rose known for?

Malik Jabari Rose, born on November 23, 1974, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, made a name for himself as a professional American basketball player. He is an alumnus of Overbrook High School in Philadelphia, a school that also boasts the likes of Wilt Chamberlain among its graduates.

After a successful high school career, Rose attended Drexel University, where he led his team to their only NCAA Tournament victory by upsetting the University of Memphis. His exceptional performance at Drexel earned him All-American honors, and he averaged over 16 points and 12 rebounds per game throughout his four-year college career. The 1995-96 men's basketball team that Rose led was later inducted into the Drexel athletic Hall of Fame.

Embracing the professional league, Malik Rose was drafted in the second round by the Charlotte Hornets in 1996 and later signed as a free agent by the San Antonio Spurs in 1997. Despite being undersized, Rose quickly became popular for his hustle, defense, and skill. He played on the Spurs' NBA championship teams in 1999 and 2003. However, in 2005, Rose was traded along with a pair of first-round draft picks to the New York Knicks for Nazr Mohammed and Jamison Brewer. His highlight during his tenure with the Knicks was a near triple-double performance in a 94–93 win over the Charlotte Bobcats. Rose saw his final NBA days with the Oklahoma City Thunder, traded for Chris Wilcox in 2009.

Rose's career statistics are quite impressive as well, scoring 5,003 points (6.2 ppg), 3,371 rebounds (4.1 rpg), and 684 assists (0.8 apg). You can check his stats at NBA.com and Basketball-Reference.com.

Besides his playing career, Malik Rose also excelled as an executive, winning the NBA G League Executive of the Year in 2018. His current role is with the Detroit Pistons, where he serves as the Assistant General Manager.

Over his illustrious career, Rose has his number 00 jersey retired by Drexel Dragons and has won numerous awards, including two times NBA champion (1999, 2003), third-team All-American UPI (1996), two times America East Player of the Year (1995, 1996), and three times North Atlantic tournament MVP (1994–1996).
