What is Colman Domingo known for?

Colman Jason Domingo was born on November 28, 1969, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he attended Overbrook High School before majoring in journalism at Temple University. He is of Belizean and Guatemalan descent. After attending university, Domingo moved to San Francisco, California, where he began his acting career mainly in theatre productions.

Domingo has contributed significantly to both stage and screen. He gained recognition for his early roles on Broadway that included the 2005 play "Well" and the 2008 musical "Passing Strange." Arguably, one of his most notable performances was his portrayal of Mr. Bones in the Broadway musical "The Scottsboro Boys" in 2011. This role not only earned him a nomination for the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical, but also a nomination for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Musical when he reprised the role in the West End production in 2014. Domingo also showcased his writing skills when he wrote the book for the Broadway musical "Summer: The Donna Summer Musical" in 2018.

On the screen, Domingo's talent is no less remarkable. He had his breakthrough role playing Victor Strand in the AMC series "Fear the Walking Dead," which began in 2015 and continues to the present. In 2022, he won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his evocative portrayal of the recovering drug addict Ali on the HBO series "Euphoria." Furthermore, Domingo's film appearances include noteworthy roles in "Lincoln" (2012), "Selma" (2014), "If Beale Street Could Talk" (2018), and "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" (2020). For his role in "Zola" (2021), he received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Supporting Male. Recently, he portrayed civil rights activist Bayard Rustin in the Netflix film "Rustin" (2023).
