Major League baseball player, Class of 1961

What is Larry Haney known for?

Larry Haney, born on November 19, 1942, in Charlottesville, Virginia, is an esteemed alumnus of Orange County High School, VA, class of 1961, and a baseball icon who managed to carved out a notable career in the Major League Baseball (MLB).

Haney commenced his vibrant MLB career on July 27, 1966, playing for the Baltimore Orioles and concluded it on October 1, 1978, with the Milwaukee Brewers. Larry Haney was a right-handed catcher who, throughout his career, played for prominent teams such as the Baltimore Orioles (1966–1968), Seattle Pilots (1969), Oakland Athletics (1969–1973, 1974–1976), St. Louis Cardinals (1973), and Milwaukee Brewers (1977–1978).

During his 13-year MLB tenure, Haney posted some impressive stats. He wrapped up his career with a .215 batting average, belted 12 home runs, and batted in 73 runs. Yet, it was his defensive skills that made him such a valuable asset to the teams he played for. With a robust .985 fielding percentage, he was good at working with pitching staffs. Moreover, he successfully threw out 110 of 282 stolen base attempts (39.0%) and picked off nine runners during his career. Haney was also a part of the Oakland A's roster during their World Championship year of 1974.

Some worth-mentioning highlights of Haney's career include hitting a home run in his very first Major League game against John O'Donoghue of the Cleveland Indians on July 27, 1966, and his first and only four-hit game against the Chicago White Sox on September 6, 1968. He also played for the Oakland A's in two World Series games in 1974 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Larry Haney was a two-time World Series champion in 1966 and 1974.

His career extended beyond his time as a player. After retiring, Haney served as a bullpen coach with the Brewers and even as a pitching coach in 1990 and 1991. His son, Chris Haney, followed in his MLB footprints, primarily pitching for the Kansas City Royals.
