Franklin Scott "Frank" Cates, 35, of Appomattox died Monday evening, July 24, 2006, at his residence.

He was the husband of Jessica Doss Cates.

Born in Yokosuka, Japan, on Dec. 12, 1970, he was the son of Richard and Kyoko Higa Cates of Stafford County. Frank was a representative with N.A.S.E. and was the governor of Appomattox Moose Lodge 975.

With numerous degrees in music education, he was an avid teacher of music, having taught middle school and high school band in the Cumberland, Goochland and Appomattox county school systems. His passion for performing has been an inspiration to many of his former students, who admired and respected him deeply.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by his two sons, Joshua Scott Cates of Fayetteville, N.C., and Jackson Allen Cates of Appomattox; his sister and brother-in-law, Michelle C. and Robert "Bob" Thatcher of Spotsylvania County, and their three daughters, Marissa, Megan and Maxine; his two grandmothers, Yoshiko Higa of Japan and Eleanor Cates of New Kensington, Pa.; his father- and mother-in-law, Timmy and Teressa Doss of Appomattox; and his sister-in-law, Michelle Bryant and her husband, Matthew, of Gladstone.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 30, at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Stafford Chapel, with the Rev. Sylver L. Gaddis officiating. Burial will follow in Stafford Memorial Park.
