Deneen spent two years in Kailua, Oahu, and returned to Minnesota, where she graduated from North St. Paul High School in 1984. Deneen was a natural and gifted teacher, who from early on regularly created a classroom in the family living room, teaching ABCs and 123s to childhood friends, stuffed animals and family pets. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame, Ind., in 1988. As an educator and mother of a child with autism, Deneen passionately advocated for the rights of children with special needs.
