January 12th, 2010 a epic magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit the small island country of Haiti, bringing with it devastation that is unmeasurable, completely leveling entire towns. I knew that day I had to go and help anyway I could. I am a practicing RN in both Intensive Care Medicine and Emergency Medicine in the U.S and knew my skills could be of use in Haiti. I made arrangements for my children, told my husband I was leaving and packed enough food, water and medical supplies for 10 days and boarded a plane not fully sure of what to expect. Those 10 days changed my life. I became a nurse to help people and for 10 days straight in Haiti I did just that. I delivered babies, repaired wounds, played with wounded children, held the hand of desperation, walked in the valley of the shadow of death and came through the other side. I stood in corners to enhale my power bar surrounded by military so I wouldn't be killed for my food and water and was thankful for boys with guns, something I never thought I would be as a anti-gun person. I became so thankful for my immunizations and those I gave my children because I never would have to hold my children as they died of tetanus or whooping cough something that I witness parents having to do in Haiti. I also witnessed strength, determination, hope and faith like never before from people who had lost everything. Woman who worked to keep their dirt floors clean and would give you their bowl of rice for caring for their families. True love and gratitude from everyone I met. Haiti changed my life, I would go back in an instant, and I am so glad to have glad to have had the opportunity to go.
